Childrens books

I've decided to have another shot at the macmillan prize, i was unsure about doing it because I was worried I might approach it with too many ideas and be not so open to being experimental. But first I'm looking at a bunch of childrens books, I realised all the ones i loved when I was a kid were pretty dark, and its a shame we see fewer and fewer of these on the market, but anywho heres a few images I'm finding very inspiring. Today I'm just planning to do a bunch of sketchbook work and maybe loads of thumbnails of details I imagine in my story. I have a basic storyboard but I'm not the worlds most fantastic writer, so I find it way easier to show my ideas in images. So I'm making images, and someone else is writing my story, I don't think its cheating, I just want something nicely written and spelt correctly :)

So I am doing a project on Dementia. Creating a small book that explains the things that could happen to a dementia patient, to children and teenagers. I don't want to get too caught up in the science behind the disease, but more a guide to kids thats like "hey, this might happen, but your granddad is still the same person, and you can do these things to help".
Now I was originally going to approach this like a commission for the NHS, but after a tutorial have decided to be as free with it as I want, and then if the end product needs toning down, then I'll do that. But I think its pretty important to allow myself to free up as much as possible, seeing as i am a student and I should really take advantage of that.

I've recently been doing more collages to practise my composition to see how I can make this series of images I'm working towards work better than others I've done in the past. I personally think John Baizley is the master of composition, tons of artists I lok at are great, but something about his work makes me feel weak at the knees.

So at the beginning of all this decomposition stuff I was pretty sure I could somehow beautifully illustrate decomposition in humans. Boy was I wrong. After seeing more photos and videos of death than any normal person should I've decided decomposition in humans is probably the worst kind. I am not including photos because I may loose several followers etc etc but human bodies seem to distort far more than the animal decompositions I've watched. The bloating seems far more severe, and the body breaks down in sections and far less rapidly.
So as I don't want this to be a shock piece of work at the end, I am going to play around with drawing human decomposition in different conditions, (but the lack of footage is holding me back) but I am looking into pigs and other medium sized mammals, and maybe even food.
I did venture to some exhibitions, the hunterian again of course, and I am looking into taxidermy again, but this embalming process defeats what I'm trying to explain, at the same time it is interesting that we fight signs of aging beyond death, maybe thats something for another project...
Anyway, so I am rather stuck with billions of notes and little sketching, fingers crossed I can pull something out of the bag.

So its 5am and of course, I can't sleep. So instead of scouring youtube I decide my time would be better spent looking at art and inspiration. I was really happy to find some great little blogs and the artist above, Joao Ruas. Really yummy work. His link is here, I hate to share these finds really but I know I should really! And I believ he does work for the Fable comics, so hes far fom unknown.

I've also decided I need some nice colouring pencils, so I can ween myself off fineliners a bit as theyre just as easy to travel with as a fineliner. I should probably also organise this space a bit better and maybe seperate my work from this stuff, or maybe just get round to finally making an online portfolio.

Anyway all feels good in my sketchbooks, and I'm currently feeling positive about the work I'm producing, and enjoying it instead of pulling my hair out.
Expect a much more frequent poster.

another project I worked on over the summer, and just got back is the new fringe album. It isn't released until February but it's nice to have a printed copy in my hands. Well a couple, i had to use indesign, and while it was an eye opener, I am definitely no graphic designer, but drawing pretty pictures I can do!

While Christmas seems way off and knowing it will, somehow again, catch me off guard I got this commission for a mini festival in folkestone. the guys are super nice to work for and open to ideas but i tried to stick with the themes i had used with them before. While fitting 22 band names incorporated into an image was tricky, it was well worth the challenge. dead fun, and dead colorful. So I apologize to a certain bear friend about the lack of posts of my own work, rather than cool found shit.

This post has been a long time coming, but I promise I've been very busy! I have alot of work to shove up on here and can't wait to do so. One of the projects I was working on was part of the Decked exhibition, it was really fun to work on a piece like this. It was a bit of an experiment, and while it wasn't exactly what I had in mind. Pigeons, Sewage and Collage

So I had a dream where a large number of pigeons were sexually attacking me, like they were in heat. It was really strange but definately had some great imagery. There was sewage too. Been trying to collage a bit more as I felt a bit creatively stuck. I think Ive been too concerned about the audience I'm illustrating for, rather than making something I like and want to enjoy. So now isnt a great time to challenge myself with the amount of work I have on- but I have to!

First Illustration for Book Cover

So heres what I came up with so far, today I also laid it out in indesign. But I can't upload a indd file so heres the basic illustration I'm working on at the minute. I may take it further but I'll decide that tomorrow. Also experimented with the colour of it.

Alice in Wonderland Book Cover

I decided to design for Alice in Wonderland. I thought this may be a mistake due to the imagery already surrounding the story being so famous. But I tried to use this to my advantage.

I want to create a darker version of the cover, to pick up on the adult fans of the book. I want to echo the style of the famous illustrations as ignoring them would be stupid.

So on Thursday (1st) I went along to the ICA, with a bunch of great people to have an awsome night. Infact the night was so awesome I could have not taken my friends and still enjoyed it, but its best to have company when your getting drunk and avoid the regular drunk label. Anyway the event was Heavy Pencil, its a monthly event(shamefully this was the first one I'd ever been to) and it was also the first anniversary! YAY! Well done heavy pencil!
There was mucho drawing, on big projectors (artists and designers were invired to draw live under cameras which was then projected, I got a go at it and it was super duper fun), there was a large drawing table with a few sheets of paper that covered the whole table and a live band, Django Django, and DJs! Django Django were great, and as I got ore and more drunk, the more and more I danced, they really complimented the activities...not that slugdy death metal wouldn't have but Django Django were most definately a good choice. Now onto the photos...

Well I've been working on stuff, in general, I also spent a while feeling sorry formyself and watching the entire sex and the city dvd collection, followed by the movie, thats right- I'm lame. So while feeling sorry for myself, I've been planning stuff and looking at stuff and working on a metal logo (fun and not what i usually do) so heres some stuff i like.

ermm..the robot was a thing i sketched out while doing a toy for my friend chucks birthday present, I'm thinking of taking this further...very anti-eco but I'd been bombarded by eco friendly artwork just before at an exhibition I went to.
Ermmm also some colour test on cryig kids faces, for another piece I'm slowly working towards...yeah! I think thats all I need to explain!

I've promised myself to be a bit more patient with my work. So everyday (as long as I'm not hungover, dead or in a gutter)I will be ding a heavily detailed drawing in my sketchbook. Mainly just to see where it will take me and hopefully have some profound effect on the way I work. Who knows? Anyway, heres 2 so far, unfortunately the sketchbook i piced for this project is rather awkward to scan, but a lovely size if I do say so myself!

Ive been doing character developement and thinking more and more about my animation storyboard but am still stuck as I'm not sure what medium I will be using for the animation, so I dont know what is and isnt possible. I'm definately looking down the puppetry/stop motion route as I really enjoy animations made in this way (quay brothers for one).

Biopic! New Project!

So the person I have to create a film about is Johnnie Cradock, Fanny Cradocks husband. He was famously pissed all the time, and surrounded in 70's cuisine. So I'm looking at a mixture of these 2 things. After doing some sketchbook work and finding out that I love drawing 70's cuisine I thought about how I want my film to be. I immediatly thought of food coming to life in a hybrid version of the pink elephant brigade/fantasia. Real trippy! Super Colour! Super Fun!
So yeah heres videos im looking at, also considering a mixture of puppets and drawn animation, depending on time. Or all puppetry like Science Of Sleep by Micheal Gondry....any way on to the videos!

Sexuality/Comfort- Symbiosis symbol

Each person in my group had to come up wth a symbol of our contribution to the visual manifesto, like a huge collaberative drawing/pattern, so below are my experiments on how to symbolise my creature. I decided to concentrate on sexuality and comfort so bound and crawling duvet looking objects which i then simplified into the top image... a basic pattern to work with.

The second image is my first real screenprint, it was great and I plan to do many more in April..yay! Unfortunately i havent been able to get a good photograph, so i may have to scan the image instead

I've been looking alot at brain deformations such as Split Brain (I can't remember the correct initials but I believe its ACCD or along those lines) but its when the 2 hemispheres in your brain are disconnected, therefore your speech and sight do not always work alongside each other. For example if something is seen by the right eye, the left arm can draw it, but the person cannot verbally explain the item. It shows how important the subconscious is and how much it effects our physical processes. This led on to things like agnosia (the inability to recognise objects), prosopagnosia (the inability to recognise faces also known as face blindness). Then this also led onto things such as microcephaly, which causes people born with the syndrome to have a small head..what interested me was that these people are seen as messengers from god in pakistan and are thought to bring wealth and good fortune due to there rat like appearance. So beggars steal or buy babies and children with microcephaly to make money, infact one child could be bought or sold for around $1200, so numerous children will be taken on by begging familys, often as the only source of income.

Half Man Half Robot!

Started a new project, on a tangent to the chair theme I was studying but still along the same lines. Using the shapes and forms I was making in my drawings of a 1937 dentist chair, but using the fact that 1937 was the year of the first sci fi convention to my advantage. By creating a narrative about a man living in Wales(Terry) becoming bored of his old tired joints, so replacing them with mechanical joints. I considered making a book for a while, but I want to first make a series of 5 images, and not restrain myself too much with a book form just yet. But I can see myself redeveloping the ideas and images into a book form. Unfortunately the story seems slightly too dark for children (yet again!). Anyway! On to the pictures of my progress so far!...Unfortunately no sketchbook photos yet.

I was looking over some older work, and was interested in some of my old ideas, but wanted to rework them with newer things i was doing. The first thing i was looking at was some artwork i did for a friends demo a couple of years ago....

So i Started sketching some ideas out...I've recently been using collage as a sketching tool, which has been pretty useful...it takes longer than drawing but ive found that its easier to work with sometimes if my ideas are quite obscure...

Then I finally worked on this painting, its still in progress but its pretty obvious where its going.... as i only really have detail left to do...

Was really great fun, we decided on the theme Battle..and all worked on A1 sheets then passed it on to the next person. This is from a trip to the Hunterian museum, its this wicked place with all these old scientific videos and specimens, like fetus's in pickle jars and skeletons etc...its really really amazing and recommend it to anyone!I actually did a whole bunch of sketches, but my camera was being super super lame, and as I no longer own a scanner its hard to get good shots of my work....i will scan more of these sketches in soon!

Started looking into artists on brief list, and researching others i knew.
was unsure on how to approach the layout, pattern, large image, collage or repeated image. Starting to think about mixing pattern and collage with my own drawings to create a large flowing piece simalr to Chris Ofili,Peter blake and Anne Polashenki...(see below)
also maybe bringing text as pattern or merging into pattern in simlar ways to Sweden graphics.
Also looking at maps and how charlotte mann creates drawing over spaces, of what "should" be there, like the idea of using an artificial 2d enviroment.

tea...solves all great problems as the english like to believe, just a small sketchbook extract that I quite like. I'd like to take this a lil further and perfect it a bit , maybe paint in tea(something I've been doing alot lately).
So recently I've been doing work on twins, and this is one of my unfinished pieces(some more work below). I've been looking at old women twins, because thet seem so much more proud of being twins and plus I can bring in a more kitsch theme than i usually would.

So a while ago I did a zine called "i am only human" it was really great fun and have since done some lil bits for Roadkill collective. But i have finally started another zine, it will be a split zine with Dan Roadkill and I'm very excited about it! Ive been looking alot at twins and old ladies, so my half will have that kinda theme. I will post some pictures soon of my progress and they will be for sale in the short future. I hope everyone wants a copy because it most definately will be banging....
